Pilcrow Support
Answers to common questions. If you don’t find what you need, email support@onyxapps.tech and you’ll get a reply from the developer.
- Where are my notes stored?
- On your Mac, in Pilcrow’s private app folder. Nothing is uploaded anywhere. Use File → Export All as Markdown (⇧⌘E) any time you want a copy of every note as ordinary Markdown files.
- How do backups work?
- Pilcrow saves a complete snapshot of your notes once a day and keeps the most recent 14. Open Pilcrow → Settings (⌘,) to see where they go, choose a different folder such as iCloud Drive, or back up immediately.
- How do I restore from a backup?
- In Settings, click Show in Finder to see your snapshots, each named with its date. Email support and we’ll walk you through restoring the one you want; a built-in restore button is planned.
- How do I export a note as a PDF?
- Open the note and press ⌘P, or choose File → Export as PDF. Choose where to save it and Pilcrow writes a paginated PDF with page numbers. There is no print dialog to get through.
- How do templates work?
- Templates appear in the sidebar under Templates. Press ⌘1 through ⌘9 to start a note from the template in that position, or use File → New from Template. Placeholders such as
{{date}},{{time}}and{{weekday}}are filled in when the note is created. Right-click any note and choose Save as Template to make your own. - How do tags work?
- Type
#followed by a word anywhere in a note, such as#project. Tags appear in the sidebar automatically, and disappear when no note uses them. - What happens when I delete a note?
- It moves to Trash, where it stays for 30 days before being removed permanently. You can restore it any time before then. Archived notes are kept indefinitely and simply hidden from your main list.
- I closed the window. Is Pilcrow still running?
- Yes. Closing the window saves your work and keeps Pilcrow in the Dock; click its icon to bring the window back. Press ⌘Q to quit.
